Bloggin' Tough

Hey All,

Am using my limited internet time today to pass on an important message about the dangers of using unauthorised pictures on our blogs.

Jessica from Thoughts at One in the Morning summarizes it perfectly in her post. Check it out HERE.

If some of my posts look funny in future and the graphics are all dodgy stick figures from MS paint, you'll know why.

  1. I responded with this to your comment on my post, but I thought I should post it here too... I'm going to take some pictures and post them online for free use for fellow bloggers. I'll probably take plenty of bookish pictures too. So... feel free to use those! :D

  2. LOL! Yeah, I'm going to probably have to do stick figures too. The idea of cleaning all my past posts makes me want to cry right now. I have no time! Plus I really just don't get the whole thing anyway. Who the heck cares? Sigh.

  3. If anybody does sue you for this sort of thing, they are nuts! Not many people are emotionally/mentally unstable enough to actually go through all that trouble. Being in a court of law in any country is so much hassle, it's hardly worth it over something so trivial. The person upset usually tells you to take it down or ask for permission properly, since it's so much easier.

Most people know the hassle of going to that extreme and don't bother, but there are a few who are really just crazy. I'll be a bit more careful, but I'm not going to delete every last image. I'm not making any money from any of them, after all.

  4. Thanks so much for reposting the messahe, Lan... I think it's really important people are made of aware of it. I know it seems trivial, but it's not worth the risk :/

  5. It's scary now a days what you can and cannot post. I have a section on my blog stating that I take no credit for the pictures and that they were found on the internet. Hopefully that covers things.

Thanks for stopping by and hope your internet problems are solved!

  6. Been hearing a lot about this lately. I say it's a good thing. Even though it's easy to steal photos, that doesn't mean we should do it. It is still stealing.

BTW, my favorite site to find free and legal photos is from http://www.morguefile.com/. :)

  7. There is Creative Commons, where artists let you use their work free, giving different conditions. I do a lot of research on this because I have students who do stuff like book trailers. I discussed the matter with a librarian who knew more about it than I do, and she did say that as long as you acknowledge it's usually okay. Depends on the person. Flickr accounts usually tell you what rights they want and ŵhat you can do. Mostly I use book covers, for reviews, which is fine with the publisher, or a photo of the person doing a guest post/interview. When I do need something else I look very carefully on the site. My latest pic of a wolf came from a site that just asked you to acknowledge. And I did.

  8. Thanks for the tip, Kristen. I will be bookmarking this one for a mor thorough look later. Looks good. For music, BTW, if you're doing a book trailer, say, I recommend jamendo.com. It has some wonderful music on it and most of it is free, donated by the artists. If they want payment, it says so. I have discovered a terrific group, Celestial Aeon Project, on that site, which is good for background to epic fantasy trailers. I also used a track for my class's
    Literature Circles movie.

  9. This is such an eye-opener. It'll be such a hassle to create my own images or look for ones under creative commons/public domain online but it will be worth it.
