Weekend Recap

This post is inspirited by a feature that Jessica at Thoughts At One in the Morning regularly does on a Thursday. I thought I might do one today since I've been fully MIA the whole weekend and partially MIA for a while now.
It was my birthday last Tuesday and I've been a bit melancholy that I'm now leaning very much towards the adult side of things. YA is well and truly a thing of the past. But I'm not going to turn this blog into a whining tool so instead, I want to ask you guys if you can recommend any adult paranormal books I can start reading. I figure it's high time I ventured past the YA realm to see what else may be out there. I will try anything unless it's full on romance. I somehow got over those when I was 14.
     Any suggestions?

Reading news:
-Have finished reading Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld and The Piper's Son  by Melina Marchetta.
- Currently reading Spider's Bite by Jennifer Estep (Yes BJ I finally started this series!)

Writing news:
- Aside from frantically trying to get something ready for my next writing workshop (in 3 days), and semi outlining for NaNoWriMo, not much in the writing section. Oh yeah, a while back I asked you guys to help me out with some names for Seeders in THIS POST. Just wanted you to know that I haven't forgotten and many of the suggestions you guys made will be used. Except for Jenny's  suggested name Ember, who has graduated to her own novel idea :)

Just stuff:
-I got an e-reader for my birthday AND a voucher to an online seminar on how to write, publish and market your own book so I am pretty excited.

  1. An e-reader! waaay cool. YOu will never get over your book addiction now unfortunately, lol. Happy belated birthday, but you are never too old for YA. (Says the waaaaay old woman who still reads all the books her teenagers read. YA for life!)

  2. Thanks Lani! My book addiction is insanely out of hand. It doesn't help that made up worlds are so much more interesting than the real world. I still love my YA but it's high time I read something else.

  3. AH! As I was scanning down my Google Reader and see my blog name I was like, WHAAAAT... Lol. Glad to inspire this post! I wish I could be of assistance with book recommendations, but I've got so much YA on the brain it isn't funny. You should read Deja Dead by Kathy Reichs. That's the most adult book I've read. It's all crime fighting, limited romantic element (at least in the first book from what I've heard).

Go NaNoWriMo! :D You've still got some time for outlining. I've got only a rough simple outline going, and only 3/4 of the way done. I need to get a calendar out and map out the rest of this month for free time to add details to my outline, then next month for times I'll be able to write in between work and other obligations. AH! I'm starting to get nervous. But I know we can do it!

  4. Jessica: You're so great at keeping up a blogging schedule. I am all over the place at the moment. Will note the Kathy Reichs book down.

I'm taking a few days off this week in order to get some prep time to outline my book and also to catch up on things so hopefully I am productive.

Alana: Thanks! I am not sure if I want any more birthdays :(

  5. Happy belated birthday! And I agree with the others that there's no reason to give up the YA books. I didn't really start reading them until I was waaaaay past my teenage years!

If you're looking to expand your horizons, how about urban fantasy? I like Carolyn Crane, Nicole Peeler, Dakota Cassidy, and Kelly Gay (just to name a few). Have fun discovering new authors!

  6. Yay for Spider's Bite and e-reader! Fun, fun, fun!

Adult paranormal to try (in addition to the Elemental Assassin books)

    - Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews (for humor, worldbuilding, truly kickass heroine, and slow/hot romance.)
    - The Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin Hearne (HUMOR! So funny. In a really SMART kind of way.)
    - Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs (great heroine, fantastic supporting cast, good worldbuilding, and a bit of a classic who-dunnit vibe, at least in the early books.)

  7. I love your posts, Lan. I need to start a writer's blog like this someday, that is when I actually write something!

I really love the Vampire Empire series. They are adult books, but on the young end. The vampires are really interesting creatures. There's some romance, but it's not all about that. There's mostly a lot of political things going on because the world is split into human nations about to war against vampire nations. It's really cool!

Glad I'm not the only one who hates my birthday. It's scary getting older, so I really just want to be 29 every year from now on. So, I'll just tell people I've been 29 for 6 years, lol.

  8. Happy late birthday. How come I didn't know this? So what kind of e-reader did you wind up getting? I wish I was able to recommend some stuff to you, but before I started my YA craziness I read very few, and most of those were Mary higgins clark because I was into the whole mystery thing.

  10. BJ: Thanks for the great suggestions. I'll get right on them once I'm done with Gin!

Cathy: My book review blog has somehow transformed into a writing blog and I don't know how it happened. I have been dreading the birthdays since my 24th and that was years and years ago :(

Ash: I don't even know what kind of ereader it is. It's def not a Nook or a Kindle....something weird off ebay! LOL Works fine though so I can't complain.

Alana: I don't have goodreads. I am way too Luddite at the moment to give in to another online community!

  11. I'm constantly talking up the Odd Thomas books by Dean Koontz. Have you read them...I can't remember. I'd recommend them if you haven't. I'm shocked that Ember took a whole story all to herself. Wow!
