Insecure Writer's Support Group: What are you writing for?

Insecure Writer's Support Group is a blog hop hosted by Alex J. Cavanaugh where totally insecure writers can get together and share the things that are making us go argh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've been writing for a little over 4 years now and in the entire time I don't think I've ever sat down and written a list of the reasons why I want to write. Since I am a connoisseur of lists I thought I'd feature it this month. So here goes:

1. I write because I have imaginary friends in my head that demand to be let out once in a while

2. I write because I have stories I want to tell and hope that others will want to read.

3. I write to tell the stories that I want to read.

4. I write because the process is soothing and I can direct my energy into a positive medium

5. I write so that I have some sense of control over the lives of my characters in this turbulent world we live in.

6. I write because I can't do the things I want to people I don't like in the real world so I do it in my books.

7. Lastly, and very capitalistically, I write because some day I want to be able to say that somewhere out there someone has decided that out of all the books in the world they want to use their hard earned money to buy mine.

How about you? Why do you write?

  1. Beautiful! All great reasons to write.

  2. All good reasons! The third one is the reason I started writing.

  3. I think the third one is the reason we all write. Ask any big name writer and they will tell you that one. ;-)

  4. In fact, you'd have to worry about any writer who WASN'T writing what they wanted to read, eh? (G)

  5. Some very good reasons indeed. Especially the characters in the head, they will just stay there and keep doing things until you let them out ^_^

  6. You know, #7 was very profoundly stated. The fact that someone thought my work was worth their hard-earned money, and some even liked it enough to leave a positive review, is definitely something worth working towards. It's all about connecting with people.

  7. I think I write for all the same reasons. I don't really think about it too much. I'd rather just go with my instincts and write because it's a free country and I can if I want to. I like doing it and that's good enough for me.

  8. Wonderful reasons to write. I often write because I need to empty my head of all the voices clamoring for attention.

  9. Yes to all the above! For me, there's just this need inside me where I HAVE to write. So many stories I want to tell, and it feels so good to get them down on paper. :)

I believe in comment karma. Comment and I shall return :)
